In this treatment, the patient sits or lies in a covered steam chamber while warm, herb-infused vapor surrounds the body. The steam opens the pores and channels (srotas), encouraging the elimination of toxins through perspiration

It also has a calming effect on the nervous system through gentle heat and herbal aromatics. Typically performed after a light oil massage, Bashpa Sweda sessions last 15–30 minutes and may be repeated for several days. Herbs like ginger, licorice, eucalyptus and long pepper are often used for their stimulating and decongesting properties. Because it heats the body, Bashpa Sweda is particularly beneficial for Kapha- and Vata-dominant disorders: it can relieve stiff, achy joints (as in arthritis or sciatica), reduce excess body fat by boosting metabolism, and clear nasal and chest congestion.
The enhanced circulation also supports digestion and skin health. Bashpa Sweda is generally relaxing and safe when supervised, though it should be avoided in cases of extreme heat intolerance or severe heart conditions. This gentle steam bath provides deep purification and stress relief as part of Ayurveda’s holistic approach
